For HVAC, plumbing, roofing, electrical and remodeling companies, marketing comes down to one thing: getting the phone to ring with jobs you want, in the area you serve. This guide covers the channels that matter most for home service businesses, what they typically cost and how to get more from each one, without wasting budget.
1. Google Ads: capture people who need help now
Someone searching “AC repair near me” or “emergency plumber” is ready to book. That high intent is why home services are among the more expensive categories on Google. Two large US benchmark reports put Home & Home Improvement at an average cost per click of about $7.85 to $8.33, and a cost per lead of around $90.92 (WordStream; LocaliQ). Your own costs will depend on your trade, city and competition, so treat these as a reference point.
To make each dollar work harder:
- Bid on service and emergency keywords, not broad research terms like “how to fix a leaky faucet”.
- Set your service area and hours carefully, so ads only show where and when you can take the job.
- Add negative keywords such as “jobs”, “salary”, “DIY” and “free”.
- Send clicks to a service-specific landing page with a clear call to action and a fast mobile load.
- Track calls, forms and bookings, so Google optimizes for real leads rather than clicks.
2. Local Services Ads: pay per lead, not per click
Local Services Ads appear at the top of many local searches. Instead of paying for clicks, you pay for leads, such as calls and messages from potential customers (Google Local Services Help). Businesses go through Google’s screening and verification process to take part.
Google has also been changing how badges appear on these ads. From October 2025, the Google Verified badge began replacing the older Google Guaranteed and Google Screened badges (Google Business Profile Community). If you already run these ads, check how your profile looks today.
Responsiveness matters. Answering calls promptly, replying to messages and collecting reviews all help you get more out of Local Services Ads. A missed call is a lead you paid to generate and then lost.
3. Google Business Profile: the free listing that does heavy lifting
Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a customer sees in Maps and the local results. Google says local rankings are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that you cannot pay to improve your local ranking (Google Business Profile Help). That makes a complete, accurate profile essential:
- Choose the right primary category and add every service you offer.
- Set your service area and keep your hours up to date, including holidays.
- Add real photos of your team, vehicles and finished work.
- Post updates and offers regularly.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative.
4. Reviews: your most persuasive sales tool
For home services, reviews often decide who gets the call. BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that (BrightLocal):
- 97% of consumers read reviews when looking at local businesses.
- 68% expect a business to have at least four stars.
- 47% wouldn’t use a business with fewer than 20 reviews.
- 74% focus on reviews from the last three months.
- 81% expect a reply to their review within a week.
The takeaway: a steady flow of recent reviews matters more than a big batch from years ago. Build a simple habit of asking every happy customer for a review, for example with a text message and a direct link once the job is complete. Never buy reviews or offer incentives for positive ones; it breaks Google’s policies and erodes trust.
5. SEO and AI search: be found beyond the ads
The same BrightLocal survey found that 71% of consumers used Google to research local businesses, and 45% had used AI tools such as ChatGPT for recommendations (BrightLocal). To show up in both:
- Create a separate page for each core service and each main area you serve.
- Answer common questions clearly, such as costs, timelines and what’s included.
- Keep your business name, address and phone number consistent everywhere online.
- Earn mentions from local directories, suppliers and community sites.
SEO takes time, usually months rather than weeks, but it builds a source of leads you don’t pay for per click.
6. Facebook and Instagram: build demand before the emergency
Most people don’t scroll social media looking for a roofer. But social ads work well for seasonal offers (AC tune-ups before summer, furnace checks before winter), remodeling projects that people plan in advance, and retargeting visitors who viewed your site without booking.
Putting it together
A practical order for most home service businesses:
- Get tracking in place, so every call and form is measured.
- Complete and optimize your Google Business Profile, and start a review routine.
- Launch Google Ads and, where available, Local Services Ads for your most profitable jobs.
- Build service and area pages for long-term SEO.
- Add social ads for seasonal offers and retargeting.
